Belle Tout lighthouse, on the cliffs near Eastbourne, is one of the most famous landmarks in Sussex.

In spite of its perilous position, it must be worth at least £250,000 on the open market.

Yet it is being sold to Louise Roberts, wife of Councillor Mark Roberts, for the knockdown price of just £900.

Coun Roberts has owned the leasehold of the historic building and the sale is going through under legislation giving holders of long leases the right to buy out the freeholders.

Many questions urgently need asking about this sale and if possible the deal should be stalled before they are answered.

Why did the sale of this important part of Eastbourne's heritage never go before any committee, board or council meeting?

Who authorised the sale and fixed the price? Should the wife of a serving councillor be able to make such a financial killing from the authority? Are there any restrictions on her being able to sell it on at a vast profit?

This building was a beacon of light to help lost souls at sea. The light should now be focused intently upon this extraordinary sale.
