Sunderland boss Peter Reid has slammed English referees and demanded that the FA appoint more foreigners.

The Brighton and District League and Sussex Sunday League have a foreigner of their own in Turkish official Baris Erguven. Baris, 25, is a language student in Brighton and brings with him the experience of officiating professional football back home in Turkey.

He said: "I love football so much that it would have been a nightmare spending a few years over here without being involved.

"The Sussex FA appointed me after I was recommended by the Turkish Football Federation. I would love to progress in the English game if I stay longer. It would be an ambition to ref in the League or Premiership."

Baris says English footballers have a similar temperament to those in Turkey.

He has not experienced any difficulties. However if an English player does shout something abusive he probably won't understand anyway.

Baris joked: "My English is not very good."

He has been popular on the circuit and is winning many friends with his commonsense approach. The Turk will more than happily oblige Reid and officiate one of his team's game.
