A man from Portslade has been sent to prison for his part in a dog-fighting ring.

Kenneth Langan, 32, admitted four charges of causing unnecessary suffering and failing to provide veterinary care, and was jailed for four months.

The prosecution against Langan and three others was brought by the RSPCA after an investigation by its special operations unit.

Sentencing the men at Mansfield Magistrates' Court, District Judge Peter Nuttall said: "To any right-thinking member of the public, dog-fighting and everything which goes with it is offensive.

"These were dogs which were used to fighting and they were bred for that."

He added that a large amount of dog-fighting literature, equipment and even cartoons depicting dog-fighting found at the defendants addresses showed "an unhealthy obsession" with the practice.

Langan, who admitted four charges of causing unnecessary suffering and failing to provide veterinary care, was jailed for four months.

Anthony Mullen, 43, of Birmingham, admitted three charges including causing dogs to fight and was given three months in jail.

Jeremy Brown, 46, of Chesterfield, who pleaded guilty to one charge of providing premises to be used for dog-fighting, was jailed for four months.

Ryan Nuttall, 29, of Mansfield, who admitted nine similar offences, was also sentenced to four months.
