A man has been seriously sexually assaulted after accepting a lift in what he thought was a taxi.

The 23-year-old got into the car, which had a red sign on the roof, next to Ship Street Gardens in Ship Street, Brighton, shortly after 3am yesterday.

Two men in the car drove him via Kings Road and Marine Parade to Duke's Mound, where they parked near the telephone kiosk.

They walked the man to a nearby path and carried out the assault.

After being attacked the man hailed a taxi which took him to Brighton police station.

The car is described as fairly new, dark in colour and either a saloon or hatchback.

The driver was white, 25 to 30, of medium build with jet black bushy eyebrows. He wore a black hat, which may have been a rolled-up balaclava.

The second man was white, 35 to 40 and had short, dark, shaven hair.

Detectives are anxious to hear from the driver of the cab that took the man to the police station and anybody who was at Ship Street or Duke's Mound.

Anybody with information should contact Detective Sergeant Peter Smith or Detective Inspector Bill Warner on 0845 6070999.
