As a former churchwarden of St Nicholas', I was incensed by M Dyson (Opinion, February 22).
While Brighton and Hove City Council is aware of the plans for the reordering of the church, it has no jurisdiction in this area.
Any plan to carry out work of this nature has to have the support of the Chancellor of the Diocese, ie a faculty.
This is granted after a lengthy process, which includes a period of consultation with the parishioners.
If no objections are upheld, as in this case, the faculty is granted. A panel of historians, architects and other experienced people, including English Heritage, advises the Chancellor.
The only items being removed are the pews. Once they have gone, the beauty of the Norman font, the medieval choir screen and other features will be visible to all.
By removing the pews, we are returning the church to its pre-Victorian origins, when there was no such thing as fixed seating.
These changes have not been rushed. It is almost eight years since the first meeting about the removal of the pews.
The congregation feels this is the way to ensure the survival of The Ancient Mother Church of Brighton.
