A controversial parking scheme has been dropped after residents objected.
Brighton and Hove City Council had prepared a controlled parking scheme, including the permits, for the Goldsmid area.
It has now dropped the scheme for the north side of Davigdor Road and is considering further consultation in the south.
Dr Bob Potter, a leading critic of the scheme, welcomed the news but said residents were still taking the council to the Audit Commission.
The council had put forward the idea after receiving indications some residents would be in favour.
It undertook consultation in November, distributing 5,300 questionnaires, of which 22 per cent were returned. However, 59 per cent of the residents - most from the north of the area - were against the scheme.
Lead environment councillor John Ballance said the authority would abide by the results of the consultations.
He said: "It is clear people living north of Davigdor Road and Cromwell Road are opposed to the scheme and we have decided not to go ahead.
"But residents to the south, except those in Wilbury Road, were more supportive.
"Consultation will probably take place in the autumn in that area if money can be found for it."
