A teenage girl died after being found slumped in a town centre street early this morning.
The 17-year-old was discovered by a passer-by in Devonshire Road, Hastings, at 2am.
She was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings but died a short time later.
Police would not say whether they were treating the incident as murder but are continuing to investigate.
Detective Inspector Nigel Smith, heading the inquiry, said: "The details are still very sketchy at the moment.
"We are trying to piece together the cause of death at the moment, but at this time we simply do not know."
A force spokesman said: "We are not releasing any further details until the next of kin have been informed."
A post-mortem examination was being carried out this afternoon.
