A masked man fired a gun as he demanded cash from petrol station staff.
The balaclava-clad raider struck at the Q8 garage in Old London Road, Hastings.
He escaped with money in a white Ford Escort van driven by a male accomplice.
Nobody was hurt in the raid, which took place at 1pm yesterday.
The van was later found abandoned in Barley Lane, Hastings.
Police are appealing for witnesses. The man was white, in his early 20s, about 5ft 7in tall and stocky with short, fair hair. He wore a casual grey jacket and jeans.
