A quick-thinking tractor driver steered into a ditch to prevent a serious accident this morning.
Ian Bell, 55, was heading downhill towards a stationary queue of traffic when his brakes failed on the A283 between Steyning and Washington.
He drove his tractor and trailer of road ballast into a ditch at speed after seeing cars ahead had stopped at a set of roadworks lights.
Mr Bell, from Faygate, near Horsham, walked away from the crash at 8.25am, as did his Labrador Bonny who was travelling in the cab with him.
He said: "It's not worth thinking about what could have happened if I hadn't steered into that ditch.
"Rather than hit the traffic I ended up going across into this field. If I hadn't I could have mowed about two dozen cars down."
