It's been more than a century since the golden ball on the Clock Tower rose to the top of the mast every hour.
That was a great feat of Victorian technology in Brighton but it had to stop because the wind whistled through the mast, driving people mad.
New technology should ensure the ball works perfectly once again without causing any distress to neighbours.
And as before, it should be a terrific tourist attraction for the resort. It will even be possible to view it from the sea.
The Clock Tower has been a symbol of Brighton ever since it was built. How appropriate now Brighton and Hove have become a historic but dynamic city that this fine example of Victorian engineering and architecture should be given a new lease of life.
