It took Newhaven town councillors six months to end the contract of town clerk Paul Archer after suspending him last year.
Mr Archer, who earned £25,000 a year, was suspended on full pay.
Yet both decisions were taken in private and the public, who pay the bills, have never been told why.
Now District Auditor Peter Arkell has been called in to investigate following complaints from residents.
The people of Newhaven are entitled to know what is going on here.
What, if anything, is Mr Archer alleged to have done wrong?
A full statement is needed as soon as possible to clear the air - and possibly Mr Archer's name as well.
If tinpot town councillors are not up to this job, then it should be done by the experienced Mr Arkell.
