Too much money is spent on bureaucracy rather than on the arts and now something is being done about it.
Under new reforms, there will be a single funding organisation for all the arts in England with South East and Southern Arts merging to form a single regional office.
This makes good sense but the location of the regional office will be important. Bureaucrats will want it closer to London, such as Tunbridge Wells.
But the obvious location is Brighton, the biggest regional centre for the arts outside London.
Brighton is easy to reach, especially by train, from many parts of the region. It also has many people with experience ideally suited for running such an office.
Some bureaucrats in Southern Arts are objecting to the reforms. Well, they would, wouldn't they? What's important is the artists and not the arts structure.
