A murder victim who was beaten and stabbed was named today as James O'Hagan, a chef at the Brighton Centre.
Originally from Scotland, Mr O'Hagan, 42, was living at the Abbey Hotel in Norfolk Terrace.
He moved to Brighton about three years ago.
A post-mortem last night showed he died from a severe beating to the head, face, chest and stomach. He had also been repeatedly stabbed.
Mr O'Hagan died at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, early yesterday.
He was found fully clothed in a first-floor bedsit in Grand Parade, Brighton, at 10.30pm on Tuesday.
Police are treating the attack as a homophobic crime and they are appealing for information.
Detective Inspector Bill Warner, helping lead the inquiry, Operation Mirror, said: "We need people who knew Mr O'Hagan to come forward."
A 37-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder was still being questioned today.
Magistrates granted police permission this morning to hold the man for a further 36 hours.
Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the Grand Parade area or who knew Mr O'Hagan should contact Operation Mirror at Brighton police station on 0845 6070999.
