The "dilemma" in which elected members of West Sussex County Council find themselves (Argus, April 16) would be funny if it were not so disgraceful.
Shoreham Toll Bridge is a listed building which, nevertheless, the council has chosen to ignore for some 20 years, it seems. Is not this the same county council that, without regard of its resources or situation, will readily take action against any of its residents who similarly breach planning regulations and obligations?
This bridge should have been repaired as necessary over the years and those who have failed to ensure that happened should be called to account.
The cabinet member for environmental services says he wants to see the existing bridge refurbished (by which one assumes he means restored). That is a blinding statement of the obvious which does nothing to enhance one's confidence in Councillor Hall, who clearly hasn't bothered to brief himself on the history of this issue - not least the frequent calls over the years of the people of Adur district (including the council, if my memory serves me correctly) for the county council to fulfil its legal obligations.
