Graeme Stirzaker won both Brighton Mitre's Easter time trials.

Stirzaker, who rides for the Essex-based Anglia Sport team, won the 10mile event at Kirdford in 23min.20sec, 40 seconds faster than last year's winner James Millard (Charlotteville) from Guildford, who was second.

James Dear (Eastbourne Rovers), who started No.27, clocked 24min.2sec and this remained the fastest time until Stirzaker, off No.40, crossed the line. Dear eventually finished third.

Malcolm Horner, from Warrington, placed fourth in 24min.18sec and Brighton Mitre's Tristan Court was fifth in 24min 31sec.

National women's champion Liz Milne (GS Strada) recorded 26min. 11sec and she was faster than 33 of the male riders.

Hopes of a Sussex victory in the 25-mile event two days later were dashed when last year's winner, Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC), was a non-starter due to a cold.

The last section between Poynings and the top of Seddlescombe Hill sorted out the riders. They didn't appreciate the view from Devils Dyke but Stirzaker stormed up the hills and clocked 1hr.1mi n.46sec.

Kevin Tye (Team Omega, Kent) recorded 1hr.2min.20sec for second, while James Dear produced another good ride to lead the local riders with third place in 1hr.2min.46sec.

Mark Sinnott, fourth in 1hr 2min.54sec, led the winning Epsom team.

Sussex riders have had little opportunity to compete in bunched racing so far this season because many courses are affected by the foot-and- mouth situation.

But there were good fields for the races at the Goodwood motor circuit. Brighton Mitre's Andy Green scored a convincing win in the fourth category event.

Brighton Excelsior's 60-mile road race at Newick on Sunday (9.30am) is expected to go ahead as scheduled, as are the East Sussex CA's 10-mile time trial at East Hoathly on Saturday (2.30pm) and Sunday's 25-mile event at Maresfield (7.30am).
