Travellers have moved on from an illegal seaside camp site after breaking through £10,000 barriers which were designed to keep them out.
The group of travellers with 15 caravans had occupied the site at Goring Gap between Worthing and Ferring over the Easter period after breaching the barriers.
A court order was obtained on Wednesday to get them off the land but they moved off before any enforcement action was necessary.
Worthing Borough Council workmen are now clearing up mounds of rubbish left behind, including an armchair, a smashed TV and a caravan.
Councillor David King said residents in his ward were distressed to see travellers able to get on the land again so easily even after the barriers were put up by West Sussex County Council two years ago.
He said: "People here are somewhat despairing about the fact the travellers have access regardless of the barriers and about the inevitable mess they always leave behind.
"They seem to be able to get on to the land despite the barriers and people here are certainly distressed by that."
