Bognor boss Jack Pearce has hit out at selfish chairmen for refusing to extend the Ryman League season.

Clubs voted to finish on schedule on May 5, despite a flood of postponements this season.

That has left Bognor with a sequence of six games in eight days and Horsham and Lewes facing similar workloads.

Rocks kicked off their marathon with a win over Aylesbury which secured their place in Division One but that did not ease Pearce's irritation.

He said: "I don't blame the management committee of the Isthmian League at all. It's a decision made by the chairmen and it shows me that most people pay lip service to what they think is right.

"All the levels of football below us where the money is not so important have extended the season.

"At the higher level, where they pay them to the end of June, they have extended.

"The majority of clubs at our level are safe and they have shown they do not want to spend any more money than they have got to.

"They give no thought whatsoever to the welfare of their players, to the feelings of their supporters or their voluntary staff.

"They vote for their own selfishness and then have the audacity to say it's all wrong. It will never change. People are interested in themselves and try to make up reasons to justify what they do."

Rocks play their fourth home match in five days tomorrow and Pearce expects that hectic schedule to cost his club up to £3,000 in lost revenue as supporters pick and choose their games.

He believes the season should have been extended if only to help Canvey Island, who flew the league's flag by reaching the FA Trophy final and FA Cup second round but now see their title hopes dashed by a huge backlog of games.

Pearce added: "We had something like that in 1981. It cost us the Southern League Cup, which we lost to Romford, and we were runners-up in the league.

"Football should be judged on who is the best, not who has got to play an amazing amount of games."

Rocks' hectic run ends on Wednesday when they host Gravesend in the Full Members Cup semi-final. The winners will toss a coin to decide who gets home advantage in the final.
