Haywards Heath are eyeing a double after taking the London Two South title in style.

Heath thrashed Wimbledon 56-9 to ensure top spot with one game still to go.

Now they hope to add a sixth succesive Sussex Trophy by winning next Saturday's final against Worthing.

Skipper Dave Wattam makes no secret of the fact that the league has been his side's priority this season.

He said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the club. The players have been magnificent. It has been a stop-start season due to the weather but everyone has stayed focused."

Wattam has led the side in the absence of Henry Goodburn, who has just returned from a hand injury. Goodburn opened his try account for the season with a hat-trick on Saturday.

There were also scores from Glen Rankin, Alex Meredith, Wattam, Giles Goodburn and Owen Ashton as Heath overcame an early 9-0 deficit. Ashton slotted five conversions and two penalties.

Also on Saturday, Hastings & Bexhill won the inaugural Sussex Intermediate Shield and Bognor took a big step towards promotion.

Hastings beat Sussex One champions Uckfield 23-20 in the Shield final at Eastbourne, thanks to a drop goal 42 seconds from time by skipper Paul Sandeman.

Tim and Phil Rowland scored fine tries and Leigh Bialik kicked a penalty as Uckfield lead but Hastings' winger Dave Milham and then Steve McManus pegged them back to 13-12.

Milham's second try put Hastings 17-13 up but lock Andy Parker went over for a score which Bialik goaled to edge Uckfield ahead. Sandeman levelled with a penalty before applying the killer blow.

Hastings' assistant coach Rob Hamilton said: "I was standing behind the posts thinking 'don't go for a drop goal from there'."

Bognor crushed promotion rivals Dunstonians 46-5 to move above them on points difference.

But they fear they may be robbed of promotion if two points are deducted for fielding three overseas players in the closing stages of their recent win over Heathfield.

If the points are taken away, Bognor will need Hove to do them a favour by beating Dunstonians next Saturday before Spurle's men go to Folkestone a week later.

Bognor scored tries through Nigel Mitchell (2), Gareth Williams (2), Sean Lysaght, Steve Dove, Jonny Lang and Paul Mitchell. Stuart Pearce kicked three conversions.

Hove lost 35-11 at home to champions Dartfordians. Dom Henderson scored a try and Phil Ward kicked two penalties.

Heathfield beat Chichester 18-15, helped by tries from Simon Wilson (2) and Julian Wates. Lewis Beale kicked a penalty. Richard Johnson scored a try, conversion and penalty for Chi as Ben Polhill also went over.

Lewes won the colts' Sussex Trophy after beating Uckfield 30-5. Neil Rumble (3), Joe Altendorff and James Prescott scored tries and Mark Trathen added a penalty and conversion. Lee Evans got over Uckfield.
