It was bad enough for many people in Horsham when an incinerator was proposed by West Sussex County Council on its doorstep in Warnham.
But things became even worse when a Surrey company put forward a scheme for building one just a few miles to the north in Capel.
The commuter town faces the prospect of being sandwiched between two giant plants both burning waste.
But before people in this prosperous part of Sussex get their petition forms out, they ought to consider the alternatives.
Where could they site more landfill sites in the area and are they doing enough to recycle household refuse?
If the incinerators are allowed, it should only be on the basis that they pass equally tough conditions imposed by both West Sussex and Surrey county councils.
