Beauty contests are out of fashion these days with many people regarding them as degrading to women.
But grandmother Pauline Cliff can still remember the name of every judge who awarded her the title of Miss Whitehawk in East Brighton half a century ago. She has also kept the sash, a photograph and a cutting from The Argus so her grandchildren will know all about it.
Now the contest for Miss Whitehawk is being revived.
Pauline thinks the old contest contributed to the building up of community spirit on the often troubled estate.
Now Whitehawk is being regenerated, thanks to the New Deal for Communities project, every little helps.
It's possible the new Miss Whitehawk scheme will make someone else as proud and happy today as Pauline all those years ago.
