Two special constables were praised for their bravery today after they helped occupants escape from a burning pub.
Steve Watson and George Linley-Munro, based in Littlehampton, noticed smoke coming from The Globe pub in Duke Street just before 2am.
After helping several occupants to safety, they battled dense smoke to try to free a trapped man. Both specials later needed medical treatment after breathing in smoke.
Sergeant Dave Jones of Sussex Police said: "Their bravery should be praised, especially as in effect they are volunteers - they do the job out of their own good nature and good intentions."
The trapped man was later freed by firefighters called by the special constables, who directed them to his room. He was said to be recovering in hospital.
