Strong words from Councillor Child regarding the Conservative Party's aspirations to "ethnically cleanse travellers from Brighton and Hove".
Firstly, I doubt very much any of the travellers are "from" Brighton or Hove.
Secondly, they are not an "ethnic group" but a group of people who have decided to drop out of normal society while still expecting all the perks that living within that society brings.
Thirdly, in this context, the phrase "ethnically cleanse" could be taken with great offence by those who object to these people making the parks and public spaces their own.
This is a phrase usually used with reference to the systematic murder of one racial group by another - hardly what is going on in Brighton and Hove.
Finally, we are told Brighton and Hove is "one of the few places that tolerates travellers".
Well, Coun Child, the Labour Council and the Reverend Webster may tolerate these travellers but the tax-paying residents who comprise Brighton and Hove are, in the main, not tolerant.
It is time for the "tolerance" of Brighton and Hove City Council to stop.
