Debbie Woolgar (Worthing) increased her gold medal tally to 86 at the Sussex Track and Field Championships.

Woolgar, who has competed for 20 years, claimed the shot and discus titles at Crawley.

But her days could be numbered because Claire Smithson (Brighton and Hove) won the under-20 shot and discus with distances superior to Woolgar's. In fact, Smithson's 13.54m in the shot was a championship record.

Under-20 competitor Andrew Bennett (Lewes Tertiary) finished ten metres clear of senior champion Chris Minn (Crawley) in the 400m hurdles.

Bennett was run into third place by Nick Ball (Crawley) and Ian Barrett (Worthing) in the 200m with all three setting personal bests.

In the long jump, Richard Piper (Eastbourne Rovers) leapt 6.62m for victory at under-20 to match the winning distance of Paul Gilding (Worthing) who retained his senior title with an effort 30cm better than 12 months ago.

Paul's sister Nicky (Brighton and Hove), who missed last year's championships through injury, regained the triple jump title with 11.14m.

Blackheath's experienced Martin Airey won the 800m from promising youngster Mark Vidler (Hastings), although the winning time of 1min. 56.0sec was six seconds outside Chris Carter's 34-year-old championship record.

Meanwhile, not everyone welcomed the sudden arrival of summer in Sussex.

Clare Milborrow, one of Horsham Blue Star Harriers' leading lights, equalled her championship record in taking the 100m hurdles.

But she said: "I am not a lover of the heat.

"For most people conditions are good but I felt a bit sluggish at the end."

"Last season was a bit up and down but I have had a hard winter and I want to make a AAA outdoor final."

For that, Milborrow, 24, will probably have to run under 13.8sec, so a time of 14.08sec showed she is warming up nicely.

She later emerged to retain her 100m title in a personal best 12.18sec.
