Fast bowler Paul Havell, another of Sussex's young guns, is poised to make his first-class debut this week.

The 20-year-old has been in impressive form for the second team in the early weeks of the new season and the county plan to blood him against Cambridge University in the three-day game which starts on Wednesday.

Skipper Chris Adams said: "We were very impressed with how much Havell has improved during the pre-season tour to Grenada and, by all accounts, he's been bowling pretty well for the second team since the season started so it's time we had a look at him."

With the seconds due to start a four-day game against Hampshire at Hove tomorrow, it will be a strong team which faces the students although Murray Goodwin, Mark Davis and James Kirtley, who has led the team to four wins in Adams' absence through injury, will all be rested.

Tony Cottey hopes to play providing he has recovered from a bout of tennis elbow while Richard Montgomerie, a former Cambridge captain, will probably lead the side.

The opener had to leave the field during Saturday's Championship win over Notts after dislocating a finger but should be fit.

Kirtley and Jason Lewry both took four wickets as Notts were bowled out for 208 in 52.3 overs chasing a target of 371. It was Sussex's first Championship win at Hove for 11 months.

Lewry had match figures of 9-160, but says he wasn't completely happy with the way he bowled and will be looking to iron out some flaws against the students.

"I hadn't played for two weeks and I was very rusty, particularly in the first innings.

"To be honest my rhythm was appalling at times so I'l go to Cambridge and work on things like my run up.

"I bowled too many no balls and was a bit stretched at the crease which forced me to bowl too full a length. That's why I conceded 50 or 60 runs too many.

"We'll treat Cambridge as if it was a Championship game so we'll be ready to come back at 100mph when we play Warwickshire in the next Championship match."
