The site chosen for the May Bug Ball was taken as the first step in a direct-action campaign to protest against the proposed building of a Sainsbury's supermarket on the site behind Brighton station.

The event was not a rave in a car park (Argus, May 8). The positive atmosphere created by playing reggae music followed on from a good-natured carnival parade around the North Laine to draw people's attention to the loss of community space in Brighton to business interests.

Our main focus was to make the site safe and enjoyable for children. To achieve this, we tidied away dangerous debris, installed toilets and running water, had fire points and qualified first-aiders and acted responsibly as stewards. As one of the banners said, "Sainsbury's: Making Life Taste Bitter."

We will not allow a supermarket to make money by destroying the character of central Brighton and contributing to traffic congestion.
