LEWES Tertiary had a field day as they shocked favourites Brighton, Hove and Sussex to lift the Sixth Form Colleges tournament title at Horsham.
Tertiary scored 118 runs off their 12 overs with Pascal Norman, captain Dale Tranter and vice-captain Marc Trathen starring with the bat.
Mean fielding and fine bowling from Tranter (2-7) then limited BHASVIC to 98.
Sussex Academy player Trathen, 18, from Blackboys, near Uckfield, said: "It was our fielding which was the key to it. We bowled well, with Dale impressing, but we didn't give much away in the field at all.
"It was a very good tournament. It was well organised and didn't drag on. It's the only chance sixth form colleges in Sussex get to win anything. We have such a short season but it would be nice to be able to try and win a few other things. I think that should happen.
"Now I'm preparing with Dale to play for the county."
Tertiary hit fine form to reach the final of the event sponsored by Colman's and Sussex CCC.
First they overcame Haywards Heath by five wickets.
Tertiary batsmen took centre staged in their final qualifier against Varndean College.
Akim John, from St Vincent in the Caribbean, Stuart Mowland and Norman all scored 25 as their side totalled 144.
Coach John Jefferson praised his side.
He said: "The team did very well. Pascal carried his bat through each match and the skipper batted, bowled and led extremely well.
"Akim caught the eye too. One umpire described him as looking like Michael Holding. Marc was in good form with the bat and ball.
"Fortunately we were blessed with good weather which had wrecked a friendly we were due to play recently.
"It would be nice to play more than one tournament in the summer but the practicalities are against it with so many exams and a shortened term."
Tertiary won £300 worth of vouchers, nominating Scaynes Hill Juniors to receive half of the amount. Jefferson added: "They've got a good programme which needs encouraging."
