Have you ever had one of those journey's where everything that could go wrong did go wrong?
Did the car break down, the flight get delayed and customs get a little carried away with their duties?
Well, whatever happened to you, it couldn't have been as bad as Brighton's very-own funny man Stephen Grant's odyssey to Orkney in his search to find the greatest in-car entertainment system known to man.
A CD player/DVD player/navigation system/stereo was the impetus for his trip from hell. What should have been a relatively simple drive and flight soon turned into a Jason And The Argonauts-style quest which saw him take on the might of the RAC, the bureaucracy of train companies and the downright shoddy work ethic of a to-remain-unnamed airline.
Relayed in Grant's trademark quick-lipped style, Route One was an expertly-crafted journey through England's green and pleasant land. Anyone used to the floppy-haired comedian's compering on The Krater Comedy Club will be used to his expletive-ridden quips and slightly skewed look at the world but some would not be sure if he could hold it all together for a scheduled one-hour show (it actually ran for more than an hour and three quarters). Not only did Grant keep the impetus going but his endearing story-telling made the show fly by.
Travel nightmares may, unfortunately, be an everyday occurrence in this country but in Stephen Grant's capable hands we can at least look at the funny side.
Komedia, Gardner Street, Brighton Thursday
