Southern Water has a long, proud history of community involvement in Sussex and picked up the Business Community Citizenship last year.

Through ScottishPower Learning, a Worthing-based division of its parent company, it has been involved in a range of schemes with an emphasis on learning, safety, conservation and the environment.

The company is a major employer and encourages staff involvement, giving people time off to take part in projects they have selected themselves.

Spokesman Geoff Loader said participation in the schemes helped develop skills in staff that they could use in their work.

"Our pond water scheme has been very successful in protecting and maintaining village ponds across the county and has proved to be very popular with community groups.

"We work with schools and youth organisations, helping with reading and with swimming.

"Getting involved with people when they are young helps to develop a positive image of the company that we hope will stay with them when they are older."

Through its skill seekers programme, the company has trained many people and, in some cases, has been able to offer them a full-time job at the end of the course.

Southern Water managing director Ronnie Mercer said: "As well as seeking wider recognition for our commitment to community involvement, the process of entry to the Sussex Business Awards provides an opportunity for the business to think about its community programme in a structured way."

Companies interested in taking part in this year's awards are asked to register their name indicating the categories they are interested in.

They can do this online at www.sussex-business-awards.co.uk, or by completing the registration form available from the awards office on 01273 207155.

The closing date is July 2.
