For its 80th birthday concert, Ditchling Choral Society presented a
Festival Of The Sea as its contribution to the Brighton Festival.
A packed church sat in rapt attention for a magnificent working of Vaughan Williams'
epic large-scale Sea Symphony.
Scored for a large choir, full orchestra, baritone and soprano, this is a stunning portrait of the sea in its many moods, in its sometimes calmness but mostly in its rage, its tempests and its storms.
It is a beautiful piece requiring hard work from everyone and this version sparkled. The chorus pulled out all the stops and were on top form, singing their hearts out.
Given good musical accompaniment, as here, the Ditchling Choral Society has a sound that is beautifully-rich, controlled and full of colour.
St Bartholomew's Church, Ann Street, Brighton, Saturday
