A bid to build a supermarket on the old Hove gasworks site has been approved.
Brighton and Hove Council's policy committee agreed to the comprehensive redevelopment of the land behind George Street and Church Road, Hove.
The supermarket is expected to be run by Tesco. St Andrew's School will have to be rebuilt as part of the scheme.
Council leader Ken Bodfish said: "This long-awaited development has been planned to ensure it fits in with and adds strength to Hove shopping centre.
"Shoppers will have more choice and a derelict, contaminated piece of land will be put back into use."
Tory councillor Brian Oxley said the store would be welcomed by many people but added: "We need a high standard of design in keeping with the area."
