Why should a politician such as Councillor Mike Middleton, chairman of Shoreham Airport Board (Opinion, May 14) personalise what is a serious issue of public concern?
The GMB is not necessarily opposed to expansion at Shoreham Airport. It has, however, raised a number of matters, including those relating to health and safety if the proposals are to go ahead.
Significantly, Coun Middleton does touch upon the safety of the BAe 146 aircraft. Perhaps he betrays some frustrations that the same weekend council spin doctors were advocating the use of these "quiet" aircraft, reputable Sunday newspapers were querying their safety.
On the question of the type of jobs created by any expansion at Shoreham, I confess to being somewhat cynical as to some politicians' grandiose claims. Sussex does not require more minimum-wage, low-quality employment.
The GMB has generally backed the Government's policy on airport expansion and has significant and growing membership at Gatwick. However, we must ensure proposals are viable and not fuelled by political egos.
The GMB will continue to consult with its members at Shoreham Airport on any expansion plans.
