Peter Moores praised Sussex's batsmen after they had produced the best performance during his three years as coach against Hampshire.
The county piled up 500-7 declared against the division two leaders before Hampshire finished on 92-1 at the end of the second day.
Murray Goodwin made a career-best 195 and there was a second half-century of the season for Robin Martin-Jenkins as Sussex made their highest total since scoring 522-8 declared against Durham in 1996, a match Moores played in.
"That's the best batting performance we've produced since I became coach," said Moores.
"It was built around an outstanding knock from Murray. He set his stall out to bat time and didn't put a foot wrong. The only disappointment was that he didn't get the double hundred he deserved."
Goodwin put on 100 with nightwatchman James Kirtley and later Martin-Jenkins shared a stand of 79 with Umer Rashid.
"It's really nice to see everyone chipping in and building partnerships all the way down the order," added Moores.
Off-spinner Mark Davis took two wickets in three balls this morning to boost Sussex's chances of enforcing the follow-on.
The South African opened the bowling from the Hambleton end and was into his 11th over of the day when he lured Will Kendall forward and Richard Montgomerie snapped up the bat-pad chance at short leg.
Kendall had helped Giles White add 83 in 37 overs to take the score to 142, but there was no addition to the total when Hampshire captain Robin Smith chipped up a return catch to Davis trying to hit him through the on side.
Robin Martin-Jenkins was unlucky not to claim a second wicket after.
