I agree with most of criticism levelled at the recent BBC2 series Brighton: Out The Closet. It was, after all, a pretty lame example of mindless TV, typical of the "docu-soap" genre.
However, I must take issue with Mary Hunter (Opinion, May 31), who started off reasonably well before needlessly attacking those who participate in the Pride festival each year with a cheap jibe and finally showing her level of ignorance (if not intolerance) by intimating the bigoted clich that gay men are to blame for the spread of Aids.
While HIV and Aids are, of course, still an issue in the gay community, on the whole those who carry the virus are well aware of their responsibilities. It is certainly not a "gay disease" as Ms Hunter implies. The alarming increases in HIV infection are among the heterosexual community and caused in no small part by ignorant blokes getting "laid" on holiday with prostitutes or any piece of fluff that's "up for it".
It is the Russian roulette of promiscuity that is the potential killer - Aids doesn't discriminate as to sexual preference. We should all be careful.
