Robin Martin-Jenkins defied the pain of a rib injury to produce his best bowling of the season for Sussex.

But the all-rounder's 4-65 against Hampshire yesterday is unlikely to prevent the Championship game at the Rosebowl from ending in a tame draw.

Martin-Jenkins took 3-8 in 15 balls after tea despite his side strain, an injury which troubled him last season.

It helped reduce Hampshire to 323-8, but an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 69 between Alec Morris and Shaun Udal ensured they saved the follow-on.

Martin-Jenkins said: "It's a niggling injury which I had last year. It annoys me when I bowl and I am conscious of it getting worse because a side strain can keep you out for a long while.

"Hopefully it won't keep me out of any games, but I must admit it is quite sore."

Martin-Jenkins removed Neil Johnson, Adrian Aymes and Dimitri Mascarenhas in quick succession, but Sussex's failure to seperate Morris and Udal means the captains will have to come to some arrangement if there is to be any prospect of a positive result today.

"It's in their hands," added Martin-Jenkins. "If they declared and we scored some quick runs then we could set them a target.

"It is difficult to know what that might be because it is still an excellent batting wicket, but if they were to go for it then we would always be in with a chance of taking wickets."

Sussex head from Southampton to Swansea after the game ends for a Norwich Union League match against Glamorgan tomorrow (1pm).

But there will be no nostalgic return to his home ground for Tony Cottey.

Sussex have named the same team which lost to Surrey in the quarter-final of the Benson and Hedges Cup ten days ago with Michael Yardy expected to be 12th man.

Sussex are anxious to build on their exciting one run win over Essex a fortnight ago which gave them their first victory in Division Two.

Glamorgan welcome back off-spinner Robert Croft after his release from England's Test squad.
