Although I agree with M Thompson (Opinion, May 31) on some of the issues he raises, I fail to understand why he and so many others expect so much in such a short time of a Labour Government.

When the previous Tory Government was turfed out of power, pensioners in 1997 were over £30 per week worse off.

This was because the Tories changed the system of payment from average wages to the rate of inflation.

They also brought in eyesight test charges, which the present Government has rescinded.

In fact, although efforts were made by various bodies, including the pensioners' convention, to improve the pensioners' lot, we got nothing at all.

But we have received from this Labour administration £200 fuel allowance with no strings attached for all over 60, free television licences for the over-75s.

With this and the recent rises of 75p plus £5, I would say we haven't done too badly for a first term of a Labour Government.

If Labour is returned to give it more time needed to improve our lot, I believe we should give it our vote.
