A mother accused of killing her baby was abused by her boyfriend, a court heard.
Joby Shorter, 24, put his arm around the neck of pregnant Amanda Turner, 23, so she could hardly breathe, a jury at Lewes Crown Court heard.
Turner's friend, Kim Porter, said Shorter had abused his girlfriend since the day they met.
Miss Porter, 40, told the court Shorter had abused her friend throughout her pregnancy.
The couple, of Stonehouse Drive, Hastings, are accused of murdering baby Justice who died of a heroin overdose aged one month last year.
Witness Donna Lumb told the court after the baby was born, Turner had complained Shorter was hitting her.
She also said he was "rough" with the baby, who was nicknamed JJ.
The court has heard how the child's body was wrapped in a bag filled with ice as the couple fled Sussex for Somerset.
The case continues.
