Mavis Beacon's Typing Tutor (version 11.0) is arguably the best of its type (geddit?) on the market.

Having installed and run this software I feel it is the benchmark other typing tutors should be judged by. It is hard to find anything of consequence to criticise.

From the very earliest versions, Mavis Beacon software has installed easily and always runs like a dream. Version 11 is no different.

What makes it so good is the clever use of adaptive response technology where the tutorial programme determines your needs and adjusts the programme accordingly.

For example: If you are having trouble typing a particular sequence of letters then the tutor will identify the problem and give you extra practice.

Plenty of multi-media clips keep you entertained while you learn how to type. I enjoyed the typing games, although some may be more suitable for children. I was impressed by the way the software taught the correct way to type and even suggested the correct posture to use.

Ergonomic typing is not easy to teach but Mavis has tried very hard, which is a far cry from many other comparable packages which merely focus on speed.

The new version is quite a lot more expensive than other similar software. Those on a tight budget may be able to pick up a slightly older, cut-price, version of Mavis Beacon.

Price: £29.99.
