If bookkeeping is a nightmare, Quicken 2001 offers most of the features of large expensive accountancy software titles at an affordable price.

It gives users the opportunity to analyse their individual savings accounts, manage online banking and download bank statements automatically.

Bill management is an option. The software recognises regular payments and flags them for attention automatically.

For those with a bit more money to splash around, it can offer a single portfolio view, allowing the user to find specific investment information quickly and easily.

Quicken, one of the most enduring software titles around, is installed on literally thousands of computers around the world.

It took more than 15 years to develop and represents excellent value for money for the private individual.

The downside of any personal finance management software is you have to keep using it to get the best from it.

Alerts have to be set to tell you when cash reserves are low and when you have overspent. Every transaction has to be entered meticulously or the output will be rubbish.

For people who can do it, the benefits are inestimable. Sadly, I am not one of those fortunate few.

Despite Quicken 2001's best endeavours, I will continue to run my finances on a wing and a prayer, while relying on my bank manager and cash in my pocket.
