A bus driver deliberately rammed a car after it overtook him in a bus-only street, a court heard.

Bus driver Michael Castle, 46, was so annoyed he pulled out of the bus stop and smashed into the white Vauxhall, which was waiting at traffic lights, it was alleged.

Castle then drove into the car a second time, ramming it into railings so hard the windows smashed and the wheels were lifted off the ground, Hove Crown Court heard.

The collision took place in Brighton town centre in a street where only buses and taxis are allowed at peak times.

Castle, of Marlow Road, Brighton, denies a charge of dangerous driving on June 16 last year.

John Edmunds had been driving two friends along Western Road, when the incident happened around 4pm.

He told the court yesterday: "I was coming from a friend's house in Hove and discovered that part of the street was restricted.

"There was a bus parked on my left which was stationary, so I pulled out to overtake it.

"When I had partly overtaken it the driver hooted. The traffic was moving ahead, then he hit my rear, nearside wing.

"I felt a small bump, a bit of a dent. I then moved forward about six foot and he then drove into the side of me.

"It was a massive impact. The bus rammed my car and tried to crush it. It was a huge shock, the car was lifted off its wheels.

"We were trapped in the car it was very frightening."

He told the court the car was a "write-off".

Eye witness Melvin Francis told the court: "The driver looked grumpy and agitated. He looked upset for some unknown reason.

"He hit the car once and I thought he would stop. But he carried on."

The trial continues.
