Plans for a new £2 million library in Lewes have been given the thumbs-up by councillors.
The development in the grounds of Lewes House will also include a Citizens Advice Bureau, regional literature centre, meeting rooms and performance space.
Architect Simon Gatehouse presented his plans for the site to Lewes Council's plans committee last night. Councillors praised the scheme as "exciting and innovative".
He said one external wall could incorporate a video screen to transmit events, such as opera from Glyndebourne.
However, he admitted the building would not have air conditioning and could become hot on the ten or 15 warmest days of the year.
Councillors voted to support the scheme but asked to be consulted further on the details.
The final decision will be taken by East Sussex County Council, which also submitted the bid.
