Probation officers have been praised in a Home Office report.

Sussex's performance was declared the best in the South-East after being compared with five neighbouring areas.

Brian Clark, chief probation officer in Sussex, said: "This report shows the results of the dedicated work our staff undertake. It shows we are above average nationally and the best in the region."

Mr Clark also welcomed Home Secretary David Blunkett's announcement that a review will be carried out into the sentencing of criminals. The proposals include supervising released prisoners, including those on short sentences.

Mr Clark said: "I welcome this focus on our work as part of the law enforcement system. Our aim is to increase the proportion of ex-offenders who turn away from crime That is the part we play in protecting the public."

In April this year the previously separate probation services in East and West Sussex merged. The new service has a budget of £11 million and employs 350 staff.
