The document City Future circulated by Brighton and Hove City Council (with the Register of Electors form) states categorically that an elected mayor would select and lead a cabinet of between two and nine councillors.
This means the mayor and two of his pals (or nine of his cronies) would dictate the activities in the area.
This would be a disgraceful situation, virtually designed to encourage undue influence at the least, or bribery, corruption and abuse.
If the mayor has this power, the office is unthinkable. If he does not, the position is pointless under the conditions stated by the council itself in the circulated document.
One can ask who initiated this apparently farcical proposal but the reason why is, unfortunately, becoming abundantly clear.
