Peter Moores is backing the Sussex youngsters to shine under the Hove floodlights tonight.

Wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose and fast bowler Paul Havell are poised to make their Hove debuts in the Norwich Union League day-night game against Lancashire.

All-rounder Carl Hopkinson could make his debut after only just missing out on selection for Monday's seven wicket win over Derbyshire.

Ambrose, opening with Richard Montgomerie, scored 22 and pulled off two stumpings while Havell bowled well even though he went wicketless in his four over spell.

Moores said: "They both did really well. Tim batted with a lovely tempo, the best thing I can say about his innings was that he didn't look fazed, you'd have thought he'd played lots of first team cricket.

"Havell was a bit nervous but that's understandable because as a bowler it's all down to how you perform.

"If they are selected they could all have a big opportunity tonight. It's under lights, hopefully there will be a good crowd there and it's also on TV."

Monday's win put Sussex in fifth place and although promotion from division two has gone the county are anxious to avoid finishing in the bottom four which would mean facing first class opposition in the third round of the C&G Trophy next season.

Moores wasn't entirely satisfied with the performance against Derbyshire.

"Our fielding was very disappointing. We set high standards and we allowed them to slip and I've told the lads it's not acceptable.

"The challenge for the side is to play with the passion Sussex teams play with, whether we win or lose."

James Kirtley will make his first appearance since his international call-up.

Lancashire trio Andy Flintoff, Warren Hegg and Chris Schofield, who are also touring with England this season, line up for the visitors, who have twice beaten Sussex at Old Trafford in limited overs contests this summer.

The game starts at 4.10 pm.
