A new high-resolution security camera has been brought in to fight crime in Southwick square.
It will supply the police with sharper, more accurate images over greater distances.
It replaces an older camera in the square, which has been a target for vandalism, antisocial behaviour and more serious offences.
Police say the £7,000 cost of providing it will soon be recovered as it deters criminal acts.
Inspector Chris Drew, of Shoreham police, said: "The 24-hour CCTV cameras are linked to a control room at Brighton police station.
"Operators check the town centre and can quickly call in officers when a crime or potential problem is spotted."
Adur District Council's head of economic development Peter Davies said: "It will bring a huge improvement to community safety in the area.
"It is more difficult to see which way the camera is pointing, which should help reduce vandalism, graffiti and make people feel much safer, particularly after dark.
"The cost will be repaid over and over again by acting as a major deterrent to criminals coming into Adur's town centres."
There are also CCTV cameras in Coronation Green and Brunswick Road, Shoreham, and in North Road, Lancing.
