How much I enjoyed Adam Trimingham's article on cycling (August 29).

It is far and away the best means of getting around Brighton and Hove. Apart from walking or taxi, it is the only means of transport that gets you from your front door to right outside your destination.

As Adam says, it is healthy, quiet and non-polluting. You don't have to be young, fit and Lycra-clad, either. I am over 70 and still enjoy cycling, even if very slowly indeed.

Why are we hated so much? Is there a certain envy or are we an easy target?

I have my pet hates, too: Cars that are double parked in the cycle lane mean you have to swerve out into the oncoming traffic; and workmen's tools and rubbish left in the cycle lane without warning. This often happens along the crowded seafront.

However, as I long as I can, I will keep on cycling - twice as much effort but four times as fast as walking. We have very good champions in Bricycles and Adam. Come and join us.
