It is a bit rich of Ivor Caplin (The Argus, August 28) to urge that the King Alfred be redeveloped as soon as possible, for at a recent gathering of Hove Park residents he averred he does not get involved with local planning matters.

Moreoever, he asserts the building will not survive many more winters.

Is he a structural engineer? When was one last engaged to perform the surveys that, by law, are a necessary part of public buildings?

What is certain is that when the much-enjoyed bowling alley was run down and closed, there was a surplus of £250,000 from the Bowline company entirely owned by Brighton and Hove City Council.

What has happened to this sum, which would be handy for keeping the building in tolerable repair until due consideration has been given to the shape its redevelopment should take?

The King Alfred's accounts have always contained charges against income for the repair work, the lack of which Mr Caplin laments.

His notion of a rush job is, then, ill-considered and he should stick to his line that he does not comment upon local planning matters.
