Activists protested outside a McDonald's restaurant over the company's sponsorship of events at next month's Labour conference.

About 30 demonstrators staged a peaceful two-hour rally outside the fast food giant's branch in Western Road, Brighton, on Saturday.

The protesters - members of the Green Party, Socialist Alliance and Globalise Resistance - say Labour voters are disgusted with the party for accepting money from McDonald's.

Brighton Green Party councillor Keith Taylor said the protesters handed out leaflets and talked to customers outside the restaurant to make them aware that Labour was accepting corporate funds.

He said: "If McDonald's can sponsor a reception at the Labour Party conference then they should pay decent wages and reduce the hours they expect staff to work."

Mr Taylor added: "It has been a peaceful exchange of views and we have received widespread public support.

"We wanted to highlight the way the Government is serving the interests of people less and less.

"The sponsorship of McDonald's is an example of the corporate politics which Tony Blair is promoting."

Global Resistance activist Christine Bird said: "Labour voters are disgusted with their party."

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "There was a demonstration today, but it was peaceful and we did not need to attend."

More than 10,000 people are expected to take part in an anti-Government protest on the first day of the Labour Party conference in Brighton on October 30.
