Rugby league convert Dave Wattam has been named Summer Conference player-of-the year.

The Crawley Jets loose forward decided against picking up his award at today's Grand Final.

Instead he was hoping for 40 minutes for Haywards Heath in the National Cup after Jets were knocked out of the play-offs by Coventry at the semi-final stage.

It is the first time in four seasons the Sussex side have failed to make the final.

Wattam, 26, admitted he was delighed to win the award, based on votes from Conference chiefs and rival players. He said: "It's a surprise and a real honour. I finished the season on a low, but to win this is fantastic."

Wattam would love to play the 13-a-side game on a bigger stage but expects to concentrate on union as Heath look to establish themselves as a force in the south east.

He said: "I think I have got something to offer at a higher level and I would have liked to have had the chance.

"I had a game for London Broncos' second team and it gave me a great insight into rugby at that level. I would have loved to give it another shot.

"But I have also got to be thinking about Heath, particularly if I want to go on and become captain."

Wattam also admits he was disappointed by over confidence of some members of the Crawley club as they powered towards what looked like being a third title in four years.

Despite that, he has developed a love for the 13-a-side contest and would advise other union players to give it a go.

He added: "A lot of guys down here want to play the game and it would be nice to set up a few more teams.

"There is a lot of hoo-hah about the two codes but I just love playing rugby and I think they complement each other.

"My all round game has certainly improved since I have been with Jets and I thoroughly enjoy it."

Wattam wil pick up his award at Jets' presentation afternoon tomorrow when their second team, winners of the London Cup, are likely to take pride of place.

Player/coach Steve O'Reilly believes Jets have made great strides as a club this summer and said: "I am delighted for Dave.

"This award is the greatest accolade he could receive at this level."
