A Second World War hero who became a champion skier in his late 70s has died.

Chelsea pensioner James Woolgar, 85, was born in Hove and joined the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1935.

He was wounded after being parachuted into France on D-Day but rejoined his unit to take part in the Rhine crossing.

The Military Medal holder took up skiing in 1981 and at the age of 78 he competed in the International Alpine Cup for senior citizens, becoming overall world champion in his class.

He died at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, leaving two sons.
