So-called boy racers are using the internet to arrange race meetings in Eastbourne, police said today.

Officers say they have broken up one meeting of "cruisers" and will continue monitoring the situation.

A police spokesman disclosed that arrangements for a cruise - where drivers perform high-speed stunts - in the Asda car park at The Crumbles over the weekend had been posted on the net.

Around 30 vehicles congregated at the car park at 9.30pm on Saturday and store staff called the police because of fears over safety.

A police spokesman said: "Staff were afraid to go to their cars and felt they and their customers were in danger.

"Two units went down to talk to the drivers and advise them to leave. The situation will be monitored. We believe the meeting was advertised on the internet."

Store manager Steve Hancock also said he would keep a close eye on the situation.

He added: "There wasn't any real hassle and I don't think there has been before now.

"Obviously if it grew into the size of the Brighton cruises it could become a problem. We are contacting the owners of the site to see what could be done about it."

Eastbourne has long had a problem with young drivers who roar along town centre streets in souped-up cars.

In April we reported that Inspector Tim Mottram, of Eastbourne police, said efforts would be made to stop the cruisers from racing in Devonshire Place.

They had been allowed to meet monthly at Lottbridge Drove industrial estate but police decided their stunts were too dangerous.
